Greetings from Boulder, CO!! I know it’s later than usual for my Friday post but hey — it’s still Friday here 😉
So I’m here in Boulder for a 4-day cadaver dissection lab which has me totally geeking out over all the stuff and all the things anatomy-related. Day one is complete and I’m feeling kinda wiped from all the travel and from the intensity of the experience of spending my first day in a lab (lab coat, safety goggles, and all) dissecting a cadaver.
But honestly it’s not just this week. It’s really been a whirlwind couple of months. I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunities to travel to some really cool places — Portland in August then Boston last week, now Boulder.
These trips all had two major things in common … (1) I went to learn stuff to learn from the best in the world while I write my book and (2) I discovered my new favorite thing to do while traveling … fitness tourism.
.
Yep, it’s totally a thing. Well, at least that’s what I’m calling it. If you’re a CrossFitter, you’ve got it easy. One of the coolest things about CF is that you can drop-in to any box in the world when you’re traveling and (in most facilities, you’ll be welcomed with open arms and a healthy dose of curiosity).
This is exactly what I’ve been doing. I’ve met some super cool people along the way and seen some amazing communities and facilities — particularly at CrossFit Southie in South Boston and CrossFit Roots in Boulder.
But even if you aren’t into CrossFit, there are stil options. It’s really cool to pop into a yoga class and experience a city’s yoga culture — new teachers, new styles, new experiences. Most major cities also have boutique fitness facilities that carry a vibe that’s totally unique to the city you’re in. If you ask th locals, they’re usually super happ to tell you about these hidden gems.
And let’s not forget — for the runners — it’s always an amazing experience to run in a new city. You get to take in the sights, sounds, and vibe of the city on foot in a way that only runners can truly comprehend.
Then last, but certainly not least, early Sunday morning I’m heading up into the Rockies overlooking the city of Boulder to watch the sunrise. I cannot wait.
Have you ever tested the fitness culture of a new city while traveling?
