Protein, protein, protein!  Everyone is all about the protein right now and how important it is to build muscle and lose fat, which is definitely true, but it’s crazy how companies are trying to add protein to everything. There are all kinds of crazy formulas to help you figure out how much you should be getting each day and honestly, it’s kind of hard to get oodles of protein in unless you’re eating chicken breasts and salmon all day. Enter protein powders!

These are a few protein powders I’ve tried and I know there are loads more I haven’t, so feel free to enlighten me if there are some amazing ones out there that I just HAVE to try. I love making smoothie bowls as of late, and I’ve just been getting sample size packets of different brands and flavors to see what I like best.  Tubs of protein powder ain’t cheap, so I want to make sure I’ll actually like it before I get a huge tub of it.  Let’s do this!

Aloha – They offer a free trial, so I took them up on it.  I got a couple flavors and a few of their daily good greens to add to my smoothies.  They’re an organic plant based protein powder which has all kinds of benefits.  I thought they were a bit chalky, but the flavors aren’t too bad.  They’re on the pricier side per tub, but you do get a kosher, vegan, gluten and soy-fee organic powder, so it might be worth it.  They also have a subscription service which is kind of nice, but be aware that they will automatically enroll you if you haven’t cancelled before your trial period is up and the only way to cancel it is by actually calling them and asking to cancel.  Tricky, tricky.

Plant Fusion – This was one of the first plant based protein powders I tried.  I felt like the whey powders weren’t really agreeing with me, so decided to go the vegan route and see what happens (spoiler alert: nothing amazing happened either way).  It’s not super chalky and it dissolves well into smoothies.  It’s a little cheaper and of course, it’s vegan, soy and gluten-free.  I would get this again.  They have a chocolate raspberry one that is pretty darn tasty.

Vega One – Saw the vanilla chai flavored one and said “yes please”.  This was really good.  These are considered All-in-One Nutritional Shakes, so there’s all kinds of good stuff plus all the protein, so you don’t necessarily need to add a bunch of other ingredients with these.  Again, vegan, gluten and soy free.  Lots of protein.  A bit pricey per tub.

I see a trend here…

Body Fortress – This may have been my very first protein powder ever. I had no idea what I was looking for, saw this at the store, and said, “why not?”  The flavors are decent and they have all different kinds of blends depending on your workout needs.  Incidentally, I’ve bought the creatine powder they make as well and will use that from time to time before my workouts to give me an extra boost with the heavy weights and I’m a fan.  It’s like kool-aid.

 Quest Protein Powders – So I love the Quest bars and thought it only proper to try their protein powders as well.  I happened to pop on their site and saw they have two new flavors and did a quick chat with their rep online and thought I might ask if they would send me samples of the new flavors and right away they said they would and they went ahead and sent samples of ALL of their flavors. Score! Their powders are on the sweeter side, so keep that in mind and they are of the whey variety, but without a lot of the junk you might find in other whey powders.  IMG_20150722_182918
