The key to success rests in the small habits and choices you make every single day. So, today, I’m launching a new series called “Two Things Tuesday” — where each Tuesday I share two simple things you can do every day to help reach your goals.

For the very first edition of #twothingstuesday, we’re taking about sleep because it really doesn’t get it’s proper due. And look, I get it, it’s not as sexy as discussing the latest and greatest plan or hiring the best coach. But I’d argue that sleep is actually more important.

Because if you’re not getting enough sleep, you can’t expect to have the energy to consistently do the things you need to do to reach your goals — personal, professional, or fitness-related. And there’s no plan or amount of coaching — regardless of how fancy, expensive, or anecdotally-effective — that can overcome inconsistent execution.

In order to be successful at anything, sleep is essential. So here you go, two simple things you can do to set yourself up for sleep success:

(1) Move your body every day. Your body is made to produce energy. All day long it’s converting the food you eat into energy. Exercise uses that energy so that you actually feel tired and ready for bed at a reasonable hour. And it doesn’t always need to be intense. Any physical activity will help — even a 15-minute walk at a leisurely pace or some gentle yoga can do wonders for your stress level which will also improve the quality of your sleep. So seriously, wear yourself out a little every day.

(2) Create a wind-down routine. I do a short meditation on my back every night before bed and it’s ridiculously simple — just a dude with a soft British accent telling me to breathe, relax my body, and let go of thinking for 2-3 minutes. That’s it, nothing complicated, nothing woo woo, just chill TFO. (Check out the Headspace app – GAME CHANGER.) If meditation isn’t your thing, do some light stretches — like the one pictured here (which is one of my faves). Or even just put the devices away, wash your face, and go to bed at the same time every evening. Establishing a routine, any routine, and stick to it.

What’s your secret for a good night’s sleep?
